Morgan Fry Mouthpieces
For the discerning player looking for a superbly performing mouthpiece with traditional craftsmanship and a broad tonal palette, there is no better mouthpiece out there. All of my mouthpieces are extensively hand finished by myself using a blend of modern and traditional methods and constant playtesting to ensure not just consistency, but excellence in all aspects of performance, from richness and flexibility of tone to speed of response, ease and clarity of articulation and eveness of tone and response across the full range of the saxophone.

I offer a trial period on all of my mouthpieces. You can't be expected to make a decision on something as personal as a mouthpiece sight unseen so there is a 7 day trial period on every piece. (Full details below).
The Floridated Link article has generated such interest I am now offering modern Otto Link STMs fully finished like this. You can read the details of the process in the article. In short, I take a modern Super Tone Master and make it play like a Florida vintage STM. My brightest piece, has that big, aggressive '60s Link sound.

Tthe FLZ Slant tenor mouthpiece. These play with a huge, deep, warm, dark voice. But don't make the mistake that some other modern mouthpiece makers make ---"dark" does not mean dead! These are vibrant pieces, full of overtones with a full, rich sound. These are not your tubby large chamber mouthpieces that sound dark and kind of nice in the practice room then get buried on the gig. My unique design and quality ebonite make these lively, vibrant mouthpieces that project well and can put out a ton of sound when you push them. Likewise, you can back off and subtone and play your smoky slow blues and ballads with ease. They also have that flexibility of tone that only a large round chambered piece has. Nobody needs to sound the same all the time. When you need to manipulate the sound -- when the rhythm section is cooking the FLZ has plenty of edge when you push it, when it's a laid back blues and you want to turn on the Ben Webster loud subtone, whether you're playing a smoky ballad or burning like Brecker, all the expressive devices you are capable of are readily available.

For alto we have the NYZ. This mouthpiece has that deep, round voice with plenty of zip Cannonball and Phil Woods have. Some of the features are similar to the refacing work I often do to Meyers. But these have some distinct advantages over modern Meyers -- the chamber shape is rounder, lending a greater warmth, complexity, and solidity to the sound, and the quality of the ebonite is superior, making this a mouthpiece with vibrance and color to the sound . This is a great small group mouthpiece with a big fat sound, but I also use one for lead playing. It has the tonal flexibility to allow you to sound however you want to sound. Here is a sample of Gilad Atzmon showing just how flexible and sweet a mouthpiece this is.

I now have two soprano mouthpieces as well. The FLZ is a medium chamber, squeeze throat piece, with a big, warm dense sound and easy intonation on modern instruments. You can hear Gilad Atzmon playing on his here. The NYZ is a large chamber, open throat piece like the vintage Links, Meyers, and others. It has a broader, crisper sound than the FLZ and is the mouthpiece you want especially if you're playing on a vintage soprano that you have trouble finding a mouthpiece for.

Another feature of all my mouthpieces is the comfort with which they play the full range of the instrument. There have been weaknesses with even some of the best of the great mouthpieces of the past -- even great vintage Meyers can sound thin in the palm keys, and many otherwise great Links have sluggish response and uneveness of tone throughout the range of the instrument. There is no reason that this has to be the case. My mouthpieces are incredibly responsive from the bottom of the horn all the way through to the altissimo, and the sound is even throughout. I also build in just the right amount of playing resistance. This lends stability to the pitch and means you don't have to work to control the mouthpiece, it works with you to shape your sound, and somewhat paradoxically, is less fatiguing than a too-free blowing piece.
My mouthpieces are all hand made from the finest quality ebonite. I thoroughly adjust every parameter of each mouthpiece by hand, constantly playtesting each one and making minute adjustments to the voicing as I go. Every one is garuanteed to play great and I will never ship a piece that I wouldn't gig on myself.

NYZ Alto |
|
The sound of the NYZ Alto is inspired by the New York made alto pieces of the 40's and 50's. The rounded, medium sized chamber, medium baffle, and gently tapering squeeze throat give this piece a deep, fat, round sound with enough edge to play lead on, and enough warmth and dynamic range to play sensitive ballads in a small room. The medium length elliptical facing and precise tip work give it clean articulation and instant response. Gilad Atzmon plays on this model in a 5 tip (.073), and says, "It is fast, it projects, it is warm, it is everything I dreamed of!" Available in sizes from 5 (.073) to 8 (.085). Made from Zinner Ebonite.

FLZ Slant Tenor |
|
The FLZ Tenor piece is a large chamber piece in the style of the great Florida made pieces in the 1950's and 60's. The moderately large chamber and medium baffle give this piece great volume and projection while retaining a big deep solid sound. The sound of this piece is closest to a later Slant sig, but a bit wider and with more volume when puhsed. The articulation and respons is easy and fast as with all of my pieces. Available in tip sizes from 5 (.080") to 8+(.115"). Made from Zinner Ebonite.

NYZ Soprano |
|
The NYZ Soprano saxophone moutphiece is a large chamber, open throated piece, like the vintage 'slant signiature' Otto Links, Meyers, Buescher, etc.. The short, medium height baffle and steep floor angle work in concert with the large chamber to give this peice a wide, clear, crisp voice with plenty of overtones. Compared with the FLZ Soprano, the NYZ is a clearer, wider sound. The large chamber and open throat play well in tune on both modern and vintage instruments. Available in tip openings from .050" to .070".
